Central New York Defensive Driving offers a six-hour Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) specific to Young Drivers. This course does NOT take the place of the five-hour pre-licensing class. It is a defensive driving class specifically tailored for drivers between the ages of 16 and 21.
The Young Driver Defensive Driving course combines basics from a Level I Traffic Survival Workshop with relevant facts, topics and information for the population of 16 to 21 year old drivers. All students are provided with facts for Young Drivers. Covered topics include the Probation Period for New License Holders, Review of Junior License Rules, Regional Restrictions for a Junior Permit, Limited Junior Licenses, and Junior Licenses.
In addition to the above, the Young Driver Defensive Driving course examines "Why We Drive The Way We Do?", Stress & Speeding, Peer Pressure, Aggressive Driving & Road Rage, Stopping Distances, Cell Phones & Distracted Driving, Drinking & Driving, Driving While Drowsy, and everything youth should know about Seat Belts, Air Bags & Anti-Lock Braking Systems. Upon completion of the course, all Young Drivers will complete a Safety Checklist.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group. In 2008, nine teens between the ages of 16 and 19 die every day from motor vehicle injuries. Per mile driven, teen drivers are four times more likely than older drivers to crash. Fortunately vehicle crashes are preventable, and proven strategies can improve the safety of young drivers on the roads in our community.
